SCRIPTURE
1 Samuel 16: 1-13 Old Testament
**verse 7 b "The Lord said to Samuel, 'Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart!' "
Samuel was a prophet called by God. Israel needed a king. God tried all sorts of people , judges, prophets, to get the country Israel back to Him. Nothing worked, Israel still lost their ways. So God decided to try kings. The first king, Saul, turned out bad. So Samuel searched for a man worthy in God's eyes for this important job to anoint as king. This was an important job for a prophet. Samuel's search led him to Jesse, a sheep breeder from Bethlehem who had eight sons. Anyway, he looked at the eldest son, and no, God rejected him! Verson 7 is the important verse here. Down the line of sons Samuel looked at and each of the seven were rejected. Finally David, the youngest boy and shepherd, was approached and approved by God and Samuel anointed him with oil. They all kept it a secret because Saul was still alive. That's another story.
