SCRIPTURE
John 5: 2-9 New Testament
One Sabbath day Jesus visited the Pool of Bethesda in Jerusalem. This was a pagan pool, and looked like a swimming pool. There was a legend that an angel underneath the water stirred up the water periodically. Then miraculously the first invalid waiting at the poolside to immerse in it, would be healed.
A paralyzed man waited there for 38 years. He could not reach the water first because of his affliction, so he was hopeless or so he thought.
Then Jesus, (yes, 100% human and 100% divine) approached the hopeless man. Jesus asked him, "Do you want to be healed?" He replied that yes he did but had no one to help him get in the water and get there first. Jesus then prayed and told him to take up his mat he was lying on, carry it, and walk! He did so! Where was the divinity? Yes, it was Jesus!
LESSON
Jesus cares for all people even when they feel hopeless. It's a lesson of grace, a gift freely given, unmerited by God because of his great love for us.
